    The Perfect Ride

Every once in a while "it" all comes together.   For today's blog post, "it" is the perfect combination of riding, friends, scenery, light, and coffee.    I mentioned and shared one pic from my ride with Ben.  Today, I share just a bit more about the ride.   It was the perfect ride.

The ride started out cool.  Much cooler than I had anticipated.  I had left my neck gator in the car and I had already frozen my hands because I started with gloves on, as opposed to my mittens.   Not good.   Yet, the promise of a beautiful sunrise kept me going.    As you can see, we were rewarded.

It was a foggy morning out in the country.   The light was low and perfect.   The roads were frozen and fast.   We saw only a handful of cars and a school bus.  There is something so peaceful about being out and about in the country.

After about 15 miles, we came upon a farm house.   A large dog stood in the middle of the road.   I had ridden this road before but never encountered this beast that stood before us.   Thankfully, his stance showed he was a friendly dog.   I put down my bike, got down on a knee, extended my hand and the dog came running.

He ran with us a few miles.   You could tell he was out just for fun like we were.  Not a care or concern in the world.   He cut both Ben and I off more than once.  I think he was happy to get out too.    He dropped off behind us as we headed into the park reserve area leaving Ben and I alone again.   The fog thickened up and we made one final stop to walk around in an attempt to unfreeze our toes.  As I walked forward with the intent of shooting Ben back lit by the sun.   The light was perfect and I snapped this shot of Ben.   It's one of my favorite portraits I've taken.

As we turned south for the final leg of our journey, we rolled side by side chatting and talking about some bigger life issues.  Neither of us had the answers, but that wasn't necessarily the intent of our conversation(s).

The sun burned off the fog revealing a perfect blue sky.    We rolled back to town to get coffee and discussed the next ride before parting ways.  Simply an amazing day and an amazing ride.

I also snapped 3 of my favorite pictures I've taken this year, one being the above shot of Ben standing with bikes .  The sunrise and the light was perfect!  I'll share another one later this week as the image is quite powerful and has meaning to me.   My bet is you may see the third shot someday either here or somewhere else.

That's the perfect ride.  Until next time.....

Photo Friday - Going to the Sun

Ahhh....It's Friday.    I'll be heading out shortly for a Friday morning ride.   That will make two mornings in a row.   I can only hope that today's ride is half as good as yesterday's.   I got out for a spin outside of Farmington, MN with Ben.   It was a really nice morning and I'm thankful for yesterday in so many ways.    One of those reasons is that I had a riding partner.   Typically, I am alone when I witness these incredible sunrises.

The sunrise was just incredible!  Just before this picture was snapped, Ben and I walked out into the field to the right of that big tree to watch the sun peek over the horizon.   Truly spectacular.   Just before I put my camera away to get back on my bike, I quickly snapped a handful of pics of Ben riding towards the sun.   I love the giant tree, the sun and how the telephone poles & road are endless and eventually disappear somewhere on the horizon.

Thanks for the incredible morning ride Ben!  We'll have to do that again.

Photo Friday - The Hot Sun!

I can't handle another snow picture this week.   So...I dug into the photo archives and found a picture that brought me to a happy and warm place.    Today's photo is brought to you from a bible camp in northern MN.   Just looking at this picture reminds me of a hot day in and around the water followed by a picturesque sunset by a beautiful lake.

    Aahhh......Doesn't that sound nice?!

I hope you all have a fun weekend planned.  I hope to ride my Fargo sometime and somewhere on Saturday.

Photo Friday - A ride in the snow

I had a whole series of images prepped for this week's Photo Friday.   However, things change and I can't get something out of my mind.   Riding.   I love riding and this week has been great.   Every once in a while, I get to capture an image or two that really capture what I saw and what I felt while out riding.

I left in the dark.  As the sun rose, I found myself riding in a perfect snowy paradise.   I stopped.  Took a few deep breaths.   Looked around.   I was in awe.

Simply one of the most beautiful winter morning snow rides I have ever had.

Hope you all have a great weekend planned.   I can't wait to be at home this weekend.

Photo Friday - Sunrise on the River

Despite our crap tastic monotone gray weather, I've had a great week.   I got so much done at work this week and I made some personal decisions that have freed me.   Earlier in the week I had planned a photo for today, but instead I wanted to find a picture that represented how I feel today.   Refreshed.   Refocused.    Since I haven't had many photo opportunities this week, I had to dig into last weeks pics.

The morning I took this picture was cool, crisp and beautiful.  I love the morning sun.   The rising sun is so symbolic.    It rises regardless of the previous days events; good or bad.  It rises and brings warmth, light and life.   I was out riding on this beautiful morning to think.  I came back refreshed.

Hope you all have had a good week and have a fun weekend planned.   My 7 year old is participating in his first Pinewood Derby race this weekend.   Should be interesting.   Report coming next week.

    Have a great weekend folks.

    The Route

I've led on for a bit that I've got a route in mind.   This is a route that I don't think has been done on a bicycle before.   Parts of it may have been done but I don't think the entire route has been completed because it would involve riding on a series of lakes & trail and walking and/or carrying your bike for certain sections that have a no bike rule.

This little muse of finding/creating this route has turned into quite a fun little project.   Route planning is kind of like building a bike, a step like process leading to a final destination.   Until this little project, I hadn't realized just how much fun route planning can be.

I'm hoping it stays below freezing so I can do this route.   I'm also waiting for that next time we get 2-4 inches of snow so I can find my way and be the loan track on this new route.   Sure I could go out and ride it sooner rather than later, but in my head there is something symbolic about being the first and only track on this route.   Thankfully, I have patience and a few months of MN winter left.  I'm fairly certain that the perfect conditions will happen.

So....Here's to all those uncharted routes.  I suggest that you all take out a map, find a point on that map and see if you can come up with a "new" route to get there.   Mix it up.  Ski and bike.  Hike and bike.   Whatever.  Just get there.

    See Ya!

For the first time in a while, I did not one thing bike related this weekend.   Nope. We spent the weekend having fun.  Nope, we spent the weekend skiing and hanging out with friends and having family fun.

I'm no skier.  I did not grow up skiing or skating.   In fact, I'm quite terrified of having planks attached to my feet and ankles.  But, I must say it went pretty well for me.   Learning to skate ski (XC) really has helped me understand the movements.    So did the equipment.   The new (to me) equipment is amazing...And short!

When we left, we really did not know how the kids would do nor how long we would be gone.  But....We were reminding that kids are amazing and learn faster than adults.   We ended up being out all day.

Mid day, we split up a bit for a few runs.  I spent much of the afternoon cruising and making new trails with my daughter.   We were playing follow the leader and making our own routes and having fun.    Pretty darn cool.   I think the high point was seeing her overcome here fear and quickly turning that fear into fun.   "Daddy I like to go fast!"  I think my highlight all day was her cruising up next to me and saying "See Ya!" as passed me.

All in all an incredible day and a way to spend the weekend.  It was also a good way to cap off a good week of excercise.    This week had me walking, hiking, riding and skiing.  Can you say cross training?

But....These old bones are sore.    The weather is good so I need to get this butt on the saddle.   I hope to get a few longer rides in this week while the weather is in the 20's.   Stay tuned.

    Photo Friday

All week I've been posting pictures of the natural world.  Today, I bring you a couple of pictures of a man made world.

Photographers often say you shouldn't shoot in the bright sun.  Baaah!    I say shoot in the sun.   Heck, I say shoot into the sun.    Heck, I say shoot always.    You never know what you might get.   I've been shooting into the sun a lot this year.     When something is between you and the bright sun,  you can get dominating and strong shadows.   I like that.

These are cement cylinders from an old munitions plant, U More Park, in Rosemount, Minnesota.   A couple of months ago, I saw them for the first time.   I have no idea what they were used for?   There are hundreds of them.  Then over Christmas holiday, I found yet another road that goes very, very close to these structures.

I really like this last photo.   Not because of the quality of the image.  I like that the beautiful and natural tree on the horizon is framed by man made cylinders.    I like that that it looks like nature survived despite man's attempt(s).

On a lighter note, thanks to all the readers this week.   Yesterday you set an all time high for page views on this site.   Sometimes I wonder why I put so much time in here?    Everytime I think that, someone sends me mail, makes a comment and occassionally a new record is set.

I am humbled by the support and encouragment.   Thank you all for reading my little blog about life, bikes, adventure, and photography.

Hope you all have a great weekend planned.   Weather permitting, we are going on a new Gnat family adventure.   Stay tuned!
